Why We Like Spelling (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee)

As I was just writing a comment I stopped on the word "their" and attempted to correct the spelling. I reminded myself of that cute little rule "I before E unless after C." So I changed the spelling to "thier." But that's not right. The rule clearly states that I comes before E unless after C, but there is no C in "their" so why then does the I comes after the E?

did you just write this post so you could use a title from Spelling Bee?

No. I wrote it the moment I realized the rule does not always apply, and that made me angry, because it's a rule I often use. As for wanting to use a Spelling Bee title, I've actually been saving Pandemonium from Spelling Me for a blog where I rant about life being unfair, but I needed a title for this blog and the one I went with was the most fitting.

nice. I'm sorry to have accused. I swear there are more exceptions to the rule than words that follow it! Life is pandemonium that way.
